Ben over the last two years of his college career was flawless. His first two years were not half bad either, each time going losing in the finals of the NCAA tournament. Ben Askren will mostly be remembered for the entertaining fashion he wrestled his matches. He always had fun and always put on a show for the fans.
In 2008 he won the U.S. Nationals and Olympic trials and competed in the Bejing games. Since then he has continued on as an volunteer wrestling coach and has begun training mma at American Top Team in Columbia, MO. His first fight is likely to be in early 2009.

looking good just need to attack that takedown right away even though you got it fairly easy, your striking needs to get deadly or your gona face someone with good striking and there gonna light you up now iknow you can elude that with great wrestling but the really good fighters no all the loopholes
yoo. ben needs to come down to nc and train with team huskey. learn some catch wrestling. awesome skills. i think johnny (huskey) could tighten his game up.
ben will be competing in ADCC 2009, the worlds tuffest grappling tournament, it will be interesting to see how he compares with the likes of marcelo garcia, gsp, pablo popovitch, Kron Gracie, Bill Cooper, just to name a few... his wrestling will be great as we all know but i dont think he can hang in that field with his bjj skill set... it is great dont get me wrong but not up there with those guys... im wondering if gsp will even place in that field... i hope he does hes back down training with Renzo for it so we will see
its obvius that ben is not a puncher...but he seem to be more that aduqgate at the ground game....quit hating taht he is not fighting like everyone else because he neer did anythiong like everyone else....Askran = unorthaodox that just how it is
ps he is one of the best collge wrester ever
i have a very important question for all wrestlers. would a funk roll work in mma? i dont see any thing that is wrong with it. it may open you up for foot locks but i dont know of any footlocks that can be used in that situation.i think it would nuetralize a better wrestler's wrestling. Are there any trainers or fighters who think otherwise?
Bruce Lee in the octagon hell thats a great question he is very strong dispite his size so he would almost always be underestimated not to mention the speed and force he could create I guess it would depend on the fight match up. he was awesome at what he did but when you put the ground in the mix he may have been lost. Hell good question
askren has a hell of a long ways to go, and can keep fighting these guys they pulled off a bar stool. i love the guy but this is pitiful.i hope he stays with wrestling. wait till he runs into a puncher.
Outcast said: Owe hell ya no doubt that Askren has a nice base and starting point but in the same token so does Matt as for the striking ya needs work but all the same even with Askens freestyle it still took awhile for him to gain the control its a great fight to talk about. To be honest I guess I was wrong the fight wasnt impressive to me but the 2 fighters showed alot of potential I truly expect to see some great fights come from both of these guys. Matt maybe talk to your trainer and if your going to fight at 170lbs walk around at 190lbs instead of 205 ya the weight is great and all but I am wondering if the impact of that kind of drop played a role. Hell what do I know I could be dead wrong. ; )
your right on. fighter will understand that the muscle mass makes you slow and have bad conditioning. some guys need to start training the way bruce lee train. Another question is how would Bruce Lee fair in a fight ????????
either Ben sucks and cant punch..OR hes Good as HECK and doesn't even have to punch to beat his opponents...anyways..i believe we've just discovered the new CHUCK NORRIS!!!!!
Asdfgasdf lets leave the insults out of this I am intitled to my opinion as is everyone else but if you wanna run your mouth you can just go F**** yourself you cowardly ass B**** its about fun and the sport. With that being said I liked the comment that Tex said the "dont even compare ben to gsp. ok first of all gsp is a beast hes olny the welter weight champoin for a reason" yes Ben is agreat wrestler but this is about mma.
We have a winner. Drew Bappe hit the nail on the head. Ben NEVER looks good in competition, but always comes out on top. The guy is a freak of nature with an extraordinarily stong mental game.
Always liked watching Ben wrestling in college, but this is the second time for me watching him MMA and its flat out ugly. He moves awkwardly, no punching skills, leaves himself open. Anyone with decent boxing and kicking skills will destroy him.
I don't follow mma much at all, but from what I've read, it seems like lots of people are unimpressed with how Ben looks so far. Let me tell you, Ben never LOOKED very impressive wrestling either. He was so slow, methodical, and almost sloppy looking. But guess what? He fricking pinned everybody with his unorthodox style. Doesn't suprise me that Ben doesn't LOOK impressive, yet continues to win.
gsp has done nothing in wrestling . askren was a 2xdan hodge winner. which is the best wrestler in college. Olympian. us national champ at the senior level . and has sweet hair
So again if you've watched his fights, heard people talk about him, and read about his training you would know GPS knows his wrestling and knows it decently well. To the extent of being able to beat some of the better US wrestlers in a pure wrestling match, that we will not know until that type of match occurs.
GSP does train wrestling with the Canadian National team and other MMA stars with wrestling backgrounds. Those people have said GSP is a very well rounded wrestlers as well. So yes he does know wrestling though he does focus on most shots and sprawls. However, since he hasn't done just wrestling events it is hard to determine just where he stands against other top wrestlers.
outcast, just because you are some wannabe mma fighter doesn't mean you have to be totally ignorant when it comes to wrestling. In a wrestling match, ben would humiliate gsp.
u cant compare gsp and bens wrestling ability, yes gsp has the best wrestling ability in ufc but ben is multi time national champ and gsp has never wrestled, gsp probably has no top game and on bottom he would get killed because ben is one of the best ever top wrestlers
I agree with both points of view here. One thing to remember is that historically MMA greats with wrestling backgrounds have gotten into trouble when they try to become strikers all of a sudden. I think Ben should stick to his strengths and not try to win MMA bouts with his striking...his strength is wrestling and that his how he will be great. That being said he will have to be a good enough striker to fend off the top dogs until he can get a good takedown.
obviously he isn't a great mma fighter right now but he is a D1 wrestling coach competing in mma. He hasn't said he was some big star he is just trying to fight and get better he is good at take downs and so far pretty decent at submissions so maybe if a bigger promoter picks him up you will see him stop coaching and go train daily with professional fighters that do nothing but train and fight. Either way he is in a d1 wrestling room so no one even ufc fighters champs included can consider themselves better wrestlers he did just make the last olympic team no one else fighting can say they wrestled for the US at his weight for the 2008 olympics. i dont see ben askren being a world champion in mma anytime soon but everyone is mad cuz he is a wrestler and we know what wrestlers do.. and that is beat ass in the ufc as well as all other promoters so lay off on talking just cuz he is a wrestler.. all you other martial arts get mad cuz wrestlers come in and beat you so pick a new battle this one is getting old
for as good as he was in wrestling, come on bro....this guy was garbage....u kidding me? north south choke lmao....the guy b4 is me right, winning is winning, but in no way is this video FLO worthy...a win is a win, yeah your right, but i guess when ur name is ben askren, it doesnt matter if your opponent is a chump....ill be impressed when he takes on someone who is a real MMA fighter, not some schlep sacrificed for askrens career....use ur legs use your hads...its called MIXED martial arts, so mix it the F up...if i wanted to see amateurs glorified id take a trip to Atlantic city

Grow some balls and throw some punches at ben. he doesnt have to brawl to win, winning is winning. Doesnt matter how u do it.... winning is winning. Congrats Ben

BEn did really well. His BJJ under Kiko is getting really solid apparently. Fan or not, youhave to give him credit. He took no damage and absolutely dominated. Kudos and Congrats. ATT is putting out some quality.
Of course there is a way out of the north-south position, but Matt didn't improve his position because Askren didn't let him. That's the beauty of jitz, always an exit route and chance to improve; however, Askren was a step ahead of him. Askren's style will transition really well into jitz. His stand up is absolutely horrible. Maybe working out in Tempe with the Lallys it will improve.
Not really impressed there was alot of talk about askrens style hell Im also freestyle at 170lbs with no wrestling background and I would have fun with Askren as for Matt hey hit me up bud theres a load of ways to not only get out of what happened but also to advance to a place where your in control I will agree with the previous comment you definatly looked in control standing up. Hats off to the fighters.
Matt, I gave you a really good warning the other day "do NOT let Ben get to your legs" and you just didn't listen. For those 30 seconds you were on your feet, you were actually winning the match. Then... well you let Ben turn it into a wrestling match and he choked you so hard your head almost turned bright red like a cherry and nearly popped off. Props to Askren!
ps he is one of the best collge wrester ever

Good maybe that will be more his style than full contact MMA.
Be intersting to see how he fairs at that big of an event.
