Ben over the last two years of his college career was flawless. His first two years were not half bad either, each time going losing in the finals of the NCAA tournament. Ben Askren will mostly be remembered for the entertaining fashion he wrestled his matches. He always had fun and always put on a show for the fans.
In 2008 he won the U.S. Nationals and Olympic trials and competed in the Bejing games. Since then he has continued on as an volunteer wrestling coach and has begun training mma at American Top Team in Columbia, MO. His first fight is likely to be in early 2009.
lol at the comment that wrestling is harder. It is no way harder, I wrestled and now I fight. Fighting is harder. Worse case scenario in wrestling you get pinned, in a fight you get your face smashed or arm damn near ripped off.
Grips N Hips, How'd that last perdiction you made on Ben go? Looks like another kick in the nuts is do it's been a couple years. I might engoy this one better.
He might not have a goo dstand up yet. Hes new to the sport, everyone is. even if he does lose his next fight he'll improve everyone learns with time. For instance, Randy Couture(wrestler) Dan Henderson(wrestler) Ryan Bader just won the Ultimate fighter(wrestler) Kevin Randleman(wrestler) Rashad Evans(current Light Heavyweight Champion(wrestler) George St. Pierre(trained/w Canadian Wrestling team) Matt Hughes(wrestler) I know i'm missing some but see all theses guys were and still are great!!
It will be interesting to see how quickly Askren improves on his striking, he took his wrestling game to a whole new level last year but mma is a whole different beast, can't wait to see it, are you guys gonna have his next one live on purefight again?
i agree with you double a, askren is a chump and is gonna get his ktfo next time you watch, he is terrible at stand up, and stand up is something you cant just learn real fast, it takes years, watch for this next guy to knock his chin all the way to china!
Flowers is twice the fighter as this guy, he just had a kid, was hurt, and only trained for like four weeks for this fight. Ya he is a better wrestler but josh is four times as better on his feet. This guy is a chump
Ok something to think about. For the 8 seconds that askren was on his feet he got punched in his twice. Just from that ytou can tell he needs to work on his standup. hes gunna be boring if he just dobules everyone, and puts legs in. If he ever gets to a higher level he wont be able to do that, hes garbage
I went to school with Askren, I was a year ahead of him and had a few classes with him. He's always been a funny crazy dude and it's awesome to see him doing stuff like this now.
#9, Flowers was clearly in a terrible position and was doing nothing to defend himself. Askren was pounding him non-stop and it was clear that Flowers was in trouble because he was simply covering the back of his head and not even trying to get out from underneath him. What exactly would have happened if the fight were to continue? I'll tell you what: They would have remained in the same position until Askren had pounded a hole into his head. And let's not forget that the "guy on top" is a two-time NCAA wrestling champion. Do you seriously think Flowers could have done anything other than be destroyed on the bottom when he was practically laying flat on his stomach?
Bull stoppages are one thing, but this is an entirely different matter. The ref made a smart move by jumping in and stopping the fight when the guy on the bottom had given up and was in a bad position. Askren won it fair and square. He did a beautiful job with the takedown, controlled him on the ground, and forced him to turtle up until he finished the job.
Oh, and a "knockout" and TKO are two completely different things. I don't recall anyone calling this fight a KO.
the real reason i gave up 2 hours of my time though was too see tyrone. id be lying if i said i wasnt curious to see ben in the cage but at the end of the day ben should be wrestling competing for a medal and tyrone the sky the limit u a beast
i dont care what anyone says the ref stopped this fight way too early, would ben have prob still won the fight, yea. but let someone get one handed to em before they call it a knockout. thats the only problem i have with this sport. when i want to take time out of my day to watch a fight or even worse have to pay for a fight and its over before i can sit down, or worse... sat down for 2 hours waiting for the fight and boom! its over. sorry if i lost ya there, but i think all "fans" feel the same way, unless of course ur in askrens corner. congrats ben its not ur fault its the ref who obv couldnt see that most of those punches were doin nothin. i see this more often now in these mma bouts, what happened to the old days
look guys, mma is the future. its drawing alot of wrestling in and lets face it its the best sport ever created! HAHA. I will bet that it'll be in the olympics within the next 15 years
this was not cheesy or a cheap win a win is a win he will gradually improve i mean cmon its his first fight obviously needs to work on his stand up but so what keep talking smack ive seen other fights that looked cheesier the guy on bottom couldnt improve his position so mr. onlooker you need to improve your onlooking or find something else to do peace
We took both camera angles from this fight and edited them together. Check it out.Level: pro Gender: m Weight Class: welterweight Match Type: mainevent
wrestling is a lot harder than this he took a step down becoming a fighter rather than staying a wrestler
