Sweet Ben! When are you coming down to play some disc in the ATX?
stop by Western....so you can see whats changed and you can tell Pritts and Coach Smith...its nutz!
There's always someone better. He just might be that guy walking down your street that has trained his whole life but saw no future in the sport. Or it might be some kid who, with two more years of practice and a little muscle, is going to beat anyone who walks his way. Maybe it would be a guy who came to the tournament but got food poisoning and was the only person who had a chance against him (or at the qualifying tournament). If the tournament was two days later it would have been a competition. Distance and time, who can dispute?
People come out of the woodwork because they're fighters at heart, because they were meant to be good. Ben has that and he has years of training so when he shows up to that tournament, and when he wins that tournament, he makes that statement: If anyone cares to be the best in the world challenge me. If they don't, what else is there to say.
P.S. to all the dudes wondering about if Grappling tourneys are hard. Here's the deal. You're average, run of the mill grappling tourneys are not that difficult to win. I was a mediocre wrestler in high school at best and just won my first tournament after about five months of training in bjj. A lot of grappling tournaments are called "World Championships," but in reality they usually just consist of scrubs. A wrestler actually has a very good chance of winning one of these average tourneys because of their strength and balance compared to your average bjj guy. Even the grappling "World Championship" that FILA organizes is nothing compared to the real tough grappling tournaments. The hardest grappling tournaments in the world are ADCC World Championships held in Abu Dahbi, and the Mundials, which are held in different places around the world. When Ben said, "It shouldn't be very tough, unless the Brazilians bring in some guys," he meant it. It has been a very long time since a Caucasian won the Mundials and it is pretty rare at the ADCC world championships as well. The brazilians dominate at grappling. Just ask Ben, he was tapped out by Pablo Papovich in no time at the ADCC World Champsionships.
Ben, it is great to hear that you're still wrestling!!! Best of luck in your wrestling, grappling and fighting endeavors.
So Mike, if Ben Askren wins this thing (and he probably will, seeing as he beat up on Volkman) will that make him the best grapper at that weight in the world? Or are there other good ones out there that don't compete in these championships?
Askren beat the defending world champ Jacob Volkman at the US national grappling tournament just a few short months ago.
never heard of a world championship that was easy...and he hasnt been doin mma or jui jitsu for that long to consider it eazy
"I'm heading to the world championships, I don't think it's gonna be very tough" what the crap? Is this not a "true" world championship?
best of luck in everything ben, you are always fun to watch.
