Thanks Mark.
And thanks for being on location and bringing us unparalleled coverage as it happens.

I've heard them say that before, but it doesn't really shed light on our discussion.
Aggression and octagon control are the parts in question.
If a fighter is backing up, won't engage at the 10 seconds warning, and not looking to finish the fight, but rather fighting only to score points, how does he win a close fight?

That's not a question pointed directly at you, Mark, but one that has puzzled me recently in the UFC.

"Effective striking & grappling, aggression and octagon control". This is the wording used for the criteria that the UFC judges use to score fights.

Yeah, I mean -- in boxing, in a close fight, the guy who moves forward and presses the fight usually scores better. But in the BJ v Edgar fight that wasn't the case. Neither was it the case for Machita v Shogun 1. Edgar did a lot of backing up. Machita did a lot of backing up. So I'm guessing the UFC doesn't score it that way. Maybe backing up a lot is a good thing to the UFC judges.

They say you have to really beat the champ to be the champ. That didn't seem to be the case either if it was close. But maybe it wasn't close on the judges score cards. Maybe Edgar scored really well by their criteria. So the question is: how are they scoring the fights.

So far we established, brilliantly by the poster below, that it's one round at a time. But beyond that, does anyone know?

one round at a time, that's funny. But I think he meant he is not sure exactly what criteria is used in scoring a fight, it seems kind of ambiguous and fuzzy at times. In their first fight nobody knew who won the fight until the decision was announced, if they would have read the scores and then said BJ won, I think people would have accepted it. It was just such a close fight and a very tough one to judge.

You idiots need to stop calling New Jersey , "Dirty Jersey"

There is nothing dirty about it aside from a few shore towns and Newark (although downtown has some a long way)
