UFC 112 saw one of the biggest upsets of the year not only in mma but in sports in general, Frankie has actually been nominated for an ESPY for upset of the year. This has got me to thinking about their immediate rematch that will take place in Boston at UFC 118. What are your thoughts on this fight?

Frankie seemed to have a good game plan in the first fight. Be fast, get in and out, and don't stop moving. Regardless of what some people's opinion of the fight was, this strategy was good enough to earn Edgar the win and the belt. What do you think will happen in this second fight? You would have to assume BJ will make adjustments to his game plan, will he try to take Edgar down and work jiu jitsu on the ground, and if so will he be able to takedown Edgar who is a high level wrestler? Maybe BJ will just make some adjustments in his striking and keep the fight on his feet. Maybe Frankie Edgar will come out with something different, or maybe we will see much of the same the second time around. I am eager to see how this fight unfolds and what to know what your thoughts are on this topic.

Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez

The stage is set for Brock Lesnar to defend his title against number one contender Cain Velasquez sometime later this year. Dana White said he was going to talk with Brock to see how his body is after the fight against Carwin, and if all is well with Brock he would like to see him and Cain get after it as soon as possible.

Brock and Cain will probably fight in the fall or winter and I am curious to know what people think about this match up. It was obvious in this most recent fight that Brock's stand up got exposed a little bit. Carwin was the superior boxer and had Brock in trouble in the first round. What enabled Shane Carwin to do all that damage and win the first round convincingly was actually his wrestling. He stopped the first takedown attempt by Brock using good wrestling skills with a deep whizzer and being able to square his hips up and get them back. This allowed the fight the remain standing until Shane dropped Brock. Coincidentally it was Brock's wrestling ability which eventually led to his win, being able to get the takedown and work on the ground.

So the question that pops into my mind is will it come down to wrestling again? Cain Velasquez showed very impressive striking skills against Nogueira and I would think he is a better boxer than Brock. But Cain is a very talented wrestler himself and works with Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier at AKA. How do you see this fight going down and will Cain Velasquez be able to defeat the champion in Brock Lesnar, or will Brock continue to reign as UFC heavyweight champion?

UFC 119 thoughts and predictions

With UFC 119 creeping up on us I thought it would be a good chance to see what people thought about this fight card. The main and co main events should be very interesting fights and I am sure a lot of people are predicting these fights to go either way.

At heavyweight we will see Frank Mir take on Mirko Cro Cop in an interesting match up that will see a striker vs a ground fighter. It seems to me that typically when this happens the fight goes to the ground fighter so I am going to pick Mir by submission.

At light heavyweight we will see TUF winner Ryan Bader taking on his coach on the show's twin brother in Antonio Rogerio Nogueira as Bader tries to continue his rise to the top and keep his record perfect. Little Nog is much more experienced in the fight game and has had more big fights and will be looking to hand Bader his first loss along the way. I am going to pick Bader to win this fight either by watching Nog with a big shot on his feet or by way of decision.

Here is the entire fight card, what are your thoughts and predictions on the event?

Main Card
265- Frank Mir vs Mirko Cro Cop
205- Rogerio Nogueira vs Ryan Bader
170- Matt Serra vs Chris Lytle
155- Sean Sherk vs Evan Dunham
155- Melvin Guillard vs Jeremy Stephens

SpikeTV Card
185- CB Dollaway vs Joe Doerksen
265- Matt Mitrione vs Joey Beltran

Undercard:
155- Thiago Tavares vs Pat Audinwood
155- Waylon Lowe vs Steve Lopez
170- Julio Paulino vs TJ Grant
265- Sean McCorkle vs Mark Hunt

NEW YORK (Sept. 13, 2010) – Two-time champion and top world-ranked heavyweight superstar Josh “The Babyfaced Assassin” Barnett has signed a multi-fight agreement to compete for world championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion STRIKEFORCE.

“STRIKEFORCE is the home of the best heavyweight division in the world and I’m proud to be able to call it my home now,” said the 32-year-old Barnett (29-5), an expert in catch wrestling who hails from Seattle, Wash.

“I’m looking forward to competing amongst the greatest fighters in the world and fighting my way to another world title.”

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Barnett became the youngest UFC champion in history at age 24 when he scored a second-round TKO (4:35) on MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture in Las Vegas, Nev., on March 22, 2002. In his sixth career fight, Barnett submitted wrestling and MMA legend Dan “The Beast” Severn with an armbar in the fourth round (1:21) in Hawaii.

In addition to his achievements in America, Barnett has spent a good portion of his career competing in top tier promotions overseas, including the now defunct PRIDE Fighting Championships in Japan where he notched memorable victories over the likes of Aleksander Emelianenko, Mark Hunt and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. On Oct. 21, 2006, Barnett took part in PRIDE’s first event on U.S. soil, submitting Pawel Nastula with a toe hold in the second round (3:04) at Las Vegas’s Thomas & Mack Center.

In 2008, Barnett competed in another Japanese promotion, Sengoku. After submitting (heel hook) Hidehiko Yoshida in Tokyo on March 5, 2008, Barnett returned to action on May 18, 2008, and earned a unanimous decision over top-ranked rival and fellow American Jeff “The Snowman” Monson.

Barnett signed an agreement to compete in Japan’s DREAM promotion earlier this year. Last March 22, he made his debut with the organization, submitting former K-1 tournament champion and devastating power puncher, “Mighty Mo” Siligia, with a kimura at 4:41 of the first round.

On July 10, Barnett followed up the strong showing with a first-round TKO (punches) over Geronimo dos Santos in the main event of a fight card in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

With Frankie Edgar taking out BJ Penn once again, and Gray Maynard getting past Kenny Florian it looks like we are set for a showdown between Edgar and Maynard for the UFC lightweight title. Maynard is the sole loss on the champion Edgar's record dating back to a fight between the two at Ultimate Fight Night 13 over 2 years ago which he won by unanimous decision.

This next fight could be different as I could see Frankie giving him more trouble than he did last time. But Gray Maynard is still a force in the lightweight division and nobody has had an Answer for his style, let's see if Edgar can do it. This fight between 2 D1 wrestlers will be an interesting one, Gray is known for using his superior wrestling to grind out victories while Frankie used a good deal of stand up in both of his victories against BJ with a few takedowns mixed in there.

What are your thoughts on this match up? Will Gray be able to impose his will on the champion and grind out a victory to earn the belt, or will Edgar be able to come up with a game plan tailored to shut down his opponent's strength like he did with BJ? Let us know what your thoughts and predictions are for this fight.

Tonight we will get to see the Bellator featherweight title fight take place between season one winner and current champion Joe Soto and former world champion wrestler Joe Warren. This should be an interesting fight and I am eager to see how it plays out. Soto is the more well rounded mma fighter and he has more experience than Warren. Soto is 10 years younger than Warren and has been fighting for 3 years longer, but Warren has won some tough fights along the way, he is tough as hell and knows how to win.

Randy Couture came into his fight against James Toney with a very smart gameplan an one you do not see very often. Come out and shoot a low single. In fact I don't think I have ever seen anyone shoot a low single ever in mma, but the Natural pulled it off beautifully. James Toney had no clue what hit him and he fell to the ground immediately and awkwardly, and once he hit the ground we all knew it was over. This probably had a lot to do with Toney have zero wrestling background, but that's his fault for talking all that smack and trying to come into mma with just his boxing background. It will be interesting to see if any other boxers try to make the transition over into mma or if what they saw on Saturday night scares them a little bit and they finally realize that mma is the most complete for of sport fighting that there is.

I can't wait for WEC 50 and really think it's going to be an awesome card. The WEC is consistently bringing quality fighters into their organization and producing solid fight cards and this one is no different.

The bantamweight division has come full circle in the last year. On August 9 Brian Bowles fought as an underdog and knocked out longtime champ Miguel Torres. That same night Joe Benavidez and Dominick Cruz fought for a chance as the title with Cruz winning that fight and eventually beating Bowles for the title. The same night that Cruz won his title, Joe Benavidez handed Miguel Torres just the third loss of his career when beat Miguel up then submitted him with a guillotine. Now we have a rematch except the last time these two fought it was for a title shot, this time it's for the belt.

On top of a great main event we've got Shane Roller vs. Anthony Pettis featuring two guys who are very close to a title shot. It will be interesting to see if Roller will use his wrestling to neutralize the striking of Pettis or if he is confident enough in his own to stand and trade.

Cub Swanson vs Chad Mendes is another great fight between a guy who has been around the top of the division vs a promising up and comer. This will be a good test to see where both of them stand.

Scott Jorgenson some say deserved a title shot over Benavidez, will take on heavy handed Brad Pickett, the English import who lives and train with Mike Brown at ATT in south Florida. Wrapping up the main card is WEC veteran Bart Palaszewski vs Zach Micklewright.

Here is the fight card with my picks in Bold, let's hear what you think...
Main Card:
Bantamweight (title fight): Dominick Cruz vs Joseph Benavidez
Lightweight: Anthony Pettis vs Shane Roller
Featherweight: Chad Mendes vs Cub Swanson
Bantamweight: Scott Jorgenson vs Brad Pickett
Lightweight: Bart Palaszewski vs Zach Mickelwright

Undercard:
Lightweight: Anthony Njokuani vs Maciej Jewtuszko
Featherweight: Mackens Semerzier vs Javier Vasquez
Lightweight: Dave Jensen vs Ricardo Lamas
Featherweight: Fredson Paixao vs Bryan Caraway
Lightweight: Danny Castillo vs Dustin Poirier

UFC 117 has turned into the Chael Sonnen show with all of the over the top trash talking that Chael has done leading up to this fight. This could have been looked at as just anohter guy that Silva is going to crush, but he has caught the attention of so many people with the things he has said about Anderson and the confidence he is displaying leading up to this UFC middleweight title shot. You hear this phrase a lot, but this time I think it could be true, "This is one of the most anticipated UFC fights in a while."

The crazy thing is that it is actually a great fight card and not just a main event, but it seems like those fights aren't really even getting paid attention to. Personally I am super excited to see the Fitch-Alves rematch and the Nelson-Dos Anjos fight. Jon Fitch beat Thiago Alves in their 2006 fight at Ultimate Fight Night 5 when Fitch stopped Alves by TKO late in the second round. Since then Alves has emerged as one of the top fighters in the weight class, each of them has a loss to GSP and the winner gets a title shot... even if that ends up being Fitch vs. Koscheck (which could be a whole other topic itself). The we have Big Country Roy Nelson who, it is not secret, was not someone Dana White was very fond of on the TUF show, taking on the very dangerous Junior dos Santos for a shot at the heavyweight title.

And of course we can't forget UFC legend Matt Hughes who will be taking on Ricardo Almeida and the always tenacious and entertaining Clay Guida taking on Rafael dos Anjos. On the undercard I personally am excited to see Johny Hendricks battle Charlie Brenneman and always excited to see Mr. Wonderful Phil Davis in action. Did anyone else see the picture of Phil at weigh ins, wow!

Let's hear what you have to say about this fight card and these match ups. Which fight are you most excited for? Do you think Chael can win this fight, or will the hype train come to a screeching hault? How many fights does Matt Hughes have left in him? Who will win more fights on the main card, USA or Brazil?

Main Card:

Middleweight title bout- Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen

Welterweight- Jon Fitch vs Thiago Alves

Lightweight- Clay Guida vs Rafael dos Anjos

Welterweight- Matt Huges vs Ricardo Almeida

Heavyweight- Roy Nelson vs Junior dos Santos

Undercard:

Welterweight- Dustin Hazelett vs Rick Story

Light Heavyweight- Phil Davis vs Rodney Wallace

Light Heavyweight- Tim Boetsch vs Todd Brown

Welterweight- Johny Hendricks vs Charlie Brenneman

Heavyweight- Stefan Struve vs Christian Morecraft

Welterweight- Ben Saunders vs Dennis Hallman

Women's mma is awesome. It's intriguing, it's entertaining- I don't think I have ever seen a boring women's fight before. In fact they have all been pretty damn exciting, the girls freaking get at it and go hard. Cris Cyborg is not just one of my favorite girls to watch, she is one of my favorite fighters to watch, just a fury of energy and skill unwinding in the cage from start to finish. I am really glad that Strikeforce has signed her and maybe they can be the organization that take's women's role in mma to the next level. Women fighting is good for mma because it is giving the opportunity to another 50% of the population to participate and compete in the sport. There are also a lot of people out there who think it is wrong and that they should be more ladylike and all that B.S. but there is nothing wrong with it, in fact there is everything right about it.
What do you think about women in mma?

These are 2 of the biggest guys in the UFC and they will collide to unify the UFC heavyweight title later this year. What are your thoughts on this match-up? Both have strong wrestling backgrounds and are extremely heavy handed. What do you see happening in this fight, will they stand and trade punches or will these wrestlers be eager to get a takedown and be on top of their opponent? Is it worth it to go for a takedown against another strong wrestler when going for that takedown could actually just tire one of them out? Jiu Jitsu...
With the Bellator semi final fights taking place in Dallas we now have a finals fight set between Dan Hornbuckle and Ben Askren. This fight should be an interesting one as we have a seasoned fighter in Hornbuckle taking on the new mma fighter in Askren. Hornbuckle is a well rounded fighter who is solid in all positions and Askren is an Olympic wrestler and a world champion grappler with limited stand up skills. What are your thoughts on this fight? Will Hornbuckle keep this fight on the feet, will Askren get the takedown? If he gets the takedown how will a ground fight between these go, if Askren doesn't get the takedown what will the fight be like on their feet? Do you see Hornbuckle looking to take Askren down, do you see something else happening between these 2? Give us your thoughts on this Bellator welterweight finals set to take place on June 17 in Kansas City, MO.

We have seen big fights in both, the UFC obviously uses the cage while we have seen big shows like Affliction use the more traditional ring. I want to know you thoughts on the age old debate, when you are watching mma do you prefer to watch it in a cage or a ring better?

The UFC obviously has a stronghold on the top of the MMA world and are the organization to point to when looking for the best, they have the most talent and the deepest weight divisions. After that there is a little drop off and a couple of respectable organizations in Strikeforce and Bellator and I want to know what your thoughts are on these to. Strikeforce has acquired a number of top fighters in the last year, has a deal with CBS and is putting on shows around the country with success. Bellator is in the second season of their tournament format and they have their fights shown on Fox Sports with a weekly highlight show on NBC. What are your thoughts on either of these organizations and which one do you like more and why?
